My favorite holiday treat is The Nutcracker, and my favorite dance is the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The best-ever version of that dance is the one by Gelsey Kirkland, in the 1977 production by the ABT, which starred Kirkland and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

So, in the spirit of the holidays, here is Gelsey Kirkland’s dance.

She’s light as a feather, bouncing around like a kid playing pretend in her bedroom. It all looks so simple and natural until you realize how perfectly graceful she is. It’s a breathtaking performance.

Edited to add: okay, I figured out how to put the video here. And you get more than just Gelsey here — you get Mikhail too. Lucky you!

  1. it’s true — she was an amazing artist! A lot of travail, apparently, but she never showed it in performance.
